If you check out Outpost Hollywood – BRING YOUR EAR PLUGS!!! The bar is that LOUD.  Outpost Hollywood is the latest addition to the Cahuenga Corridor. If Saddle Ranch had an obnoxious little brother, it would be Outpost Hollywood.  I like it, just wish it would mellow out.

On a Tuesday evening, my friend Arielle & I decided to check it out. We were greeted by two female staff members dressed in their western best, who told us that we could sit wherever we wanted. We chose a booth on the upper level, but immediately were annoyed by how loud the TV was. Since there are a lot of TVs, we asked a manager type where’s the best place to sit and he suggested a table that was a little bit quieter, but not by much.  Being a Midwest gal and all (and happy hour enthusiast), I’ve been to a fair amount of sports bars from Illinois to LA and other cities all around and I have never experienced anything that loud.  It was especially annoying when commercials were playing.

Although we made it at the tail end of happy hour, I ordered from the regular menu and decided to try the Southern Lemonade ($9). It’s a Sweet Tea vodka & lemonade drink served in a 12 oz. mason jar, a great serving size. The server required a credit card to hold until we closed out.  I thought that was a little odd for a party for two, sitting at a table with a server, in a non-crowded bar. I didn’t put up a fight though.
This drink alone was worth the visit. It's that good.
To our surprise, there are no food specials for happy hour, but the prices aren’t too bad. We were also surprised there were no plates.  We split a Texas toast grilled cheese sandwich ($6.96) and buffalo wings ($7.95) and requested plates. The server looked a little confused and brought us one basket, and then 2 medium sized red bowls. She asked if they were ok, which it was. We just thought it was odd that they did not have plates. She started to say something more about the plates, but we just took the bowls. Perhaps, the bar should have spent less money on surround sound and put it towards plates.

Later on, our server asked if we wanted a second round, but we needed a minute to finish up what we had on the table so she said she would return. I would have liked to get in on the 2-for-1 drinks offered on Tuesday nights starting at 8pm. (check their site for other nightly specials) However, the wait took a little longer than usual so we decided just to get the check instead. Plus, at that point our heads were throbbing from the noise. Seriously. By the time, I met up with JB for a happy hour post mortem, my ears were still throbbing and a little the following morning.

Good drink. Good food. With the high turnover of bars and clubs on the Cahuenga Corridor, I don’t know why a place would keep the TVs so loud that people may want to leave. That alone is enough for me not to return and choose one of the neighboring bars instead.

Bacchus Kirk

925 Bush St.
San Francisco, CA 91409

Parking: Garage 1 block from bar (unsure of cost)
Days: Daily
Time: 4-8pm
Drink Deals: $3.50 Draft Beer, $5 Well Drinks, $6 Tecates w/ shot of El Jimador & $2 off Bacchus cocktails
Food Deals: No food served here

I’ve heard from many east coast friends that there are no Happy Hours in LA (not true!) and that New York is really the only city that does Happy Hour (also not true).  But if New York is anything like San Francisco, then I cannot wait to hit up Happy Hour there because the choices were aplenty in this San Francisco! What’s great is that many bars & restaurants have signs posted outside to advertise their specials so one never has to feel cheap and ask “So, is it happy hour or what?”

If I lived in San Francisco, I would probably spend most of time at Bacchus Kirk. When I researched bars nearby my Union Square hotel, I was instantly hooked when I read that this Nob Hill place had a jukebox, fireplace, and a pool table. For me, this is a usually a sign that things are going to be all right.

As soon as I walked in with my coworker Andrew, I was very much reminded of The Woods with its dark interior, laid back atmosphere, & friendly staff.  I asked about the most popular specialty cocktail because when checking out new places, I like to branch out from my regular choice of wine when the opportunity presents itself. The bartender had no problem recommending one of their specialty cocktails. For some reason, sometimes it appears that bartenders are put out when asked for drink suggestions. If it’s busy, I kinda get it, but when it isn’t, I don’t see the problem.  Thank goodness this bartender knew how to make a gal feel welcome.

This is a seriously chill bar.
As suggested, I ordered the popular Bacchus Bramble ($6), a gin cocktail with Chambord, simple syrup, and fresh lemon juice. I’m not much of a gin drinker, but when I hear a drink is good and the combo is right, I’m always game. The drink was strong, as gin tends to be (Have you ever had a watered down gin drink?), but it was a drink that went down slow and smooth.  Never much for beer, I got the report from Andrew who tried a Big Daddy IPA ($3.50 draft) for the first time. He liked it enough to order another one.  All in all, Andrew liked that “there was a good selection for any palate.”

The Bacchus Bramble ($6)
As if good drinks weren’t enough, the bartender made a last call for Happy Hour.  Always a plus with JB & me! For my second cocktail, I ordered the peach mojito ($6) suggested by a friendly regular at the bar. And that was another thing… I really liked that the crowd was diverse all around. Not a weirdo in site (that I could see).  Next time, I’m in San Francisco, I will definitely go Bacchus Kirk!

Neat

1114 North Pacific Avenue
Glendale, California 91201
(818) 241-4542
twitter.com/neatbar

Parking: Neighborhood parking
Days: Monday–Friday
Time: 5-7:30pm
Drink Deals: ½ off all drinks!
Food Deals: N/A

I think Yelp Commenter’s Gene E’s synopsis of Neat says everything you need to know: “Come here to get your beer boner on.” Ha! Okay, I didn’t go to get my beer boner on, but I did go to see what the liquor aficionado buzz was about. And I pretty much get it – very knowledgeable bartenders that are like Cocktail Whisperers – you give them a general idea of what you like and they craft a terrific cocktail. Simple!

Also simple is the Happy Hour menu – ½ off every drink in the place from 5-7:30pm on Monday through Friday. That’s beer, wine, any booze w/ mixers or not. Sweet!! For our cocktail selections, the helpful bartender made me one of my standards of late – a very clean margarita made with Milagro tequila, soda water, simple syrup, and lime. Basic and delicious. Booze went for a variation of the Aviation, a classic gin-based cocktail, made with tequila instead. Tracy couldn’t decide what she wanted until Helpful Bartender asked if she liked vodka and cucumber and mint. Yes, please!

Cucumber Vodka Concoction

Helpful Bartender then seemed to forget about Tracy’s cocktail order and when we reminded him of it a few minutes later, he straight up gave it to her for free. So very classy and such a delicious sweet + sour cocktail. Our other 2 cocktails cost $14 total, so $7 per drink – not too bad for a well-crafted drink made with a closer to the top shelf liquor and these neat square block ice cubes.

Simple Margarita

Owned by Aidan Demarest (who’s managed a who’s who or what’s what of LA’s cool cocktail bars – Seven Grand, the Spare Room, the Edison, and First & Hope), the bar is pleasantly off the beaten path for our True Hollywood Headquarters – out in Glendale near the foothills. The space is pretty cool with a woodsy feel and a nice looking bar.

Aviation (made w/ Tequila)

But I gotta say I don’t know if I was feeling the spot overall… Maybe it was the acoustics; with a wood laminate running along the low ceiling, I felt like I could hear the conversations of everyone in the bar and they weren’t even speaking that loud. Maybe it was the no food on the menu – granted, I could have fixed this by picking up a bite at any of the adjacent restaurants and bringing it into Neat (that’s allowed), but I didn’t know what was good and didn’t want to order another non-HH priced cocktail while I found out. I think overall, Neat just didn’t feel that friendly – like the bartender, while helpful, and other patrons just weren’t the aww-shucks friendly people its neighborhood bar location would lead you to believe. Or maybe you just have to become a regular?

I do think it’s worth a stop if you’re in the neighborhood and looking for something simple and neat, and of course if you’re looking to get your beer boner on!

Susan Feniger’s Street (Redux)

742 North Highland Ave.
Los Angeles, CA 90038
(323) 203-0500
www.eatatstreet.com

Parking: Limited neighborhood parking, $8 valet (behind the restaurant before 7 pm)
Days: Monday–Friday
Time: 5-7pm (M-Th); 12pm-7pm (Fri)
Drink Deals: $5 Global cocktails, wines, and beer
Food Deals: N/A

Life on the Street… Susan Feniger’s Street has re-structured its Happy Hour menu by lowering the price points on its re-designed food menu and removing the Happy Hour-priced small plates. Happy Hour drink deals remain the same ($5 specialty cocktails).

The food prices are definitely more budget friendly if you’re having a dinner, but we are sorry to see the specially priced Happy Hour food items go. The good news is that the food + drink are still superb. Inspired by the flavorful cuisines of her international travels, Feniger has crafted an awesome menu of small plates from which we sampled the:

Edamame Hummus on Crispy Papadum Chips ($5) – Yay budget friendly Small Plate, nice Happy Hour style appetizer!

Mung Bean Pancake w/ scallion, kimchi, and shiitake ($8) – Savory and sweet and full of flavor, very tasty

Warm Halloumi Cheese Salad w/ with freshly grilled Treviso, Citrus, and Honey Thyme Vinaigrette ($9) – Terrific textures and flavors

Kaya Toast – Toast with Coconut Jam, served with an Over-Easy Egg, Dark Soy, and White Pepper ($12) – Apparently a Singaporean hangover cure, this terrific combination of sweet and savory is one of Street’s trademarks

Tataki Salmon – Marinated and seared Salmon Over Mixed Greens, Avocado, and Pink Peppercorn w/ miso Mustard vinaigrette ($12) – Flavorful and big enough to be served as an entree

The drinks are pretty swell too – for our first, JG tried the Cali Mojo, made from Red Wine + Coke, an afternoon pick-me-up drink from Spain, which we also heard is a great way to get rid of red wines that aren’t your favorites. The Cali Mojo wasn’t quite my cup of wine (+ coke), so I had the Tom Collins – here made with vodka instead of gin, and in this trip, made with oranges instead of limes. Very refreshing and probably went down a little too easy!

Cali-Mojo and her good friend, Sir Tom Collins

For our 2nd drink, we tried a secret cocktail not on the menu, the on-the-menu Arnold Palmer with the addition of Tequila. Even more refreshing and potent, a terrific warm, lazy afternoon cocktail!

Alcoholic Arnold Palmer (aka EctoCooler!)
The not-so-good news – the service was slow as molasses. Full disclosure: we were guests of Street’s PR company and even with that bonus, we still had a very difficult time getting served. The order above took about 2 hours to have served and other folks seemed to be waiting even longer. Granted, it was Tax Day and Street was offering a Tax Day (April 17th) special of Street Burgers for $4.17, but I don’t think that many of Street’s clientele would trip over themselves to save $8 on a burger.

Still, Street’s food is great and offers a nice little dining trip around the world in one airy setting in a central Highland Ave. location; we definitely think it’s worth a visit!

Bella Milano

4525 Wabash Ave
Springfield, IL 62711
(217) 547-0011

Parking: Free Parking, but of course!
Days: Monday Night
Times: All Night Long
Drink Deals: $5 Martinis
Food Deals: $5 Appetizers

I guess you can just call my hometown of Springfield, Illinois the “Martini Monday Capital of the World!” Or not :)… but since Illinois outlaws any daily deals that encourage excess drinking within a specific timeframe, Springfield has embraced the Martini Monday, where, apparently, you’re just encouraged to drink all night instead!

I’d been to Osaka’s Martini Monday and hope to visit Ross Isaacs on my next visit, but for this April 2012 trip – with my ma-n-pa and sister-in-law, KB, in tow (brother PB had to stay home with the baby, sorry brother - though he did get to go to Green Bay happy hours, that lucky duck), we headed West to visit Bella Milano, a semi-upscale Italian restaurant offering a selection of ten $5 Martinis and six $5 appetizers all (Monday) night long – in the bar side of the restaurant.

Harry Potter and the Goblets of ... Martini!
It must be popular with the locals because when we arrived, they were out of martini glasses, so our first round was served in wine goblets. For that first round, our gang tried the Dirty Martini, the Dewberry Martini (like a purple Cosmopolitan), and for me – the Wild Tea Cosmopolitan with Absolut Wild Tea Vodka, triple sec, and cranberry juice. We also quickly set about ordering – sampling the following during the course of our 2 rounds of drinks:

Calamari Fritti ($5)
Zucchini Sticks ($5)

Baked Stuffed Mushrooms ($5) – with a crabcake stuffing, topped with a house red sauce and a special blend of cheeses. Even KB, who normally doesn’t like mushrooms enjoyed these.

Bagna Cauda ($5) – Northern Italian dipping sauce served with bread and cabbage. According to Wikipedia, it’s from the Piedmonte (where some of my fam is originally from) area in Italy and is made with garlic, anchovies, olive, oil, and butter

All of the food was tasty, though we really enjoyed the Bagna Cauda. With so many Happy Hours offering the standard bar fare, it’s always a treat to try something new and different! KB commented that it would have been nice if the bread had been freshly made on site – I concur, a housemade foccacia bread would have been a perfect addition to our selection and complement to the Bagna Cauda.

Hello Kitty!

For our 2nd round of cocktails (now served in martini glasses :), Pa went with a glass of red wine, Ma switched to the Wild Tea Cosmo, KB kept it Dirty, and I tried the unfortunately named Hello Kitty with Vodka, Peach Schnapps, Cranberry juice with a hint of lime. The name says “I’m a teenage girl and this is my first cocktail,” but the drink was phenomenal and I’d highly recommend it to friends in Springfield!

It looks like Bella Milano has a handful of other Martinis that aren’t on the Martini Monday list and might be fun to try, but 8 is still a pretty good number of offerings for Martini Monday!

Some regular old Happy Hour Tourists!

Isla Cantina

8788 Sunset Blvd.
West Hollywood, CA 90069
310.657.8100

Parking: $6 Valet; Limited Street Parking
Days: Daily
Time: 4-7pm
Drink Deals: 2-for-1 on All Drinks, priced from $8-$14
Food Deals: $4-7 select appetizers

This past weekend, JB & I were so pumped after seeing 21 Jump Street, we decided to keep the party moving to happy hour at Mirabelle On Sunset. We probably should have checked the site first because upon arrival we learned that Mirabelle is closed for construction. Never to let a few taped up windows stop us, we kept it moving to 2 doors down to Isla Cantina.

I was well aware of Isla Cantina’s Happy Hour because they are constantly tweeting about their 2-for-1 deals. Not that there’s anything wrong with that! We wish more places would advertise their happy hours.  As luck would have it (unlike my last happy hour!), we were properly greeted and it was confirmed that Happy Hour was in session.

Isla Cantina is made up of three different, small spaces: a rotunda, a backroom, & a patio. We chose to sit at the high top tables in the rotunda because it was the coolest looking space.  The acoustics, however, weren’t too great and the ringing phone often sounded like it was ringing right at our table.
Fish Eye view. Not buzzed view... yet.
For drinks, I expected their margaritas to be the big hit given the name of the bar, but it turned out that there were many specialty cocktails that featured alcohol other than tequila.

Isla Cantina Happy Hour Rule: When ordering 2-for-1, you can not place an order for one person and share the 2nd drink with your Happy Hour partner. Each person has to order their own drink.
These tall cocktails are 2-for-1!
That kind of rubbed us the wrong way as we wanted to try to pace ourselves for a long night, but we quickly got over it.  I settled on the Midnight in Rio, a cocktail made with blackberries, Leblon cachaca, St. Germain, & fresh lime; JB ordered the Especial de Alex, a cocktail made with Ultimat vodka, raspberries, strawberries, agave nectar, & pineapple juice.  For our 2nd round, we traded drinks. The cool thing is that they bring the 2nd drink after you finish your first. For the fun of photos, I usually like to have both drinks served at once, but it was nice to have my second drink fresh and not watered down when I was ready for it.
Sippin on cocktail #2  - Especial de Alex
For eats, we ordered chips & guacamole ($4) and calamari ($6), served with two dipping sauces. The food was good, but we weren’t too crazy about the service. It appeared that if one is not constantly ordering (even when still working on what’s on the table); the restaurant could care less and start clearing your table to turn it over for someone who will spend more money. Even though no one was waiting for a table… We were served two complimentary salsas with our guacamole so we quickly ran out of chips, but no one ever offered us more chips. However, the table next to us got their chips refilled at least twice while they ordered lots. The server even cleared JB’s water while my drink was half full.  Obviously, this made us uncomfortable and we left after I finished my drink.
Lots of dips, but not enough chips.
While I enjoyed the food & drink and location, I doubt I would return to Isla Cantina without the promise of more welcoming service.

Chadaka Thai

310 North San Fernando Blvd.
Burbank, CA 91502
(818) 848-8520

Parking: Metered Street Parking and Various Burbank lots
Days: Daily
Times: 4-7pm (and 9:30-10:30pm at the bar on Sunday-Thursday nights)
Drink Deals: $3 Beers; $5 Cocktails, Well Drinks, Wines by the Glass
Food Deals: $5-6 Appetizers

After the crew Happy Hour’d at Burbank’s Wokcano, we moseyed Northwest on San Fernando Blvd. to visit work pal Miss P’s local Thai spot, Chadaka Thai. Miss P had only visited Chadaka for lunch and carry-out dinner before and highly recommended the quality of food. Luckily, Chadaka delivered on the Happy Hour front too!

Having dined inside at Wokcano, we opted for a table on the small patio at Chadaka, enjoying the people-watching views on the boulevard and trying to decide what we might want from the great Happy Hour food and drink menu.

4 Tasty Mojito's and a Full Moon!

Five must be the magic number on the Chadaka HH menu. While the fun selection of beers (Tsingtao, Tiger Beer, Singha, and more) was $3, most of the Appetizers and all of the other Drinks (broken down into Martinis, Champagne Drinks, Specialty Drinks, Well Cocktails, and Glass of Wine) were $5. For cocktails, we tried several of their mojitos – original, raspberry, and mango, and Miss P ordered the Full Moon with Blue Curacao, orange juice, and champagne. The drinks were all quite tasty and so was the phenomenal food, of which we tried the:

Poo Ja (wontons w/ cream cheese and crab meat) - $5

Spring Rolls - $5

Thai Eggrolls - $5

Fried Tofu & Taro w/ Peanut Sauce - $5

Bangkok Steak - $6

I really loved that 3 of the appetizers we ordered were vegetarian – the Spring Rolls had Tofu in them, the Thai Eggrolls had vegetables and vermicelli, and the Fried Tofu and Taro (Taro is like potato of the tropics :) was served with a delicious peanut sauce. Kudos to Chadaka for incorporating so many veggie dishes into the Happy Hour menu!

By the time we left Chadaka, we were stuffed from our mini-Happy Hour Tour, but even in my stuffed state, I was thinking about my next visit to Chadaka and what I’d want to eat and drink then!!
